August 5, 2010 was the day the mine collapsed in Chile. Thirty-three miners were trapped in the one-half mile underground mine in northern Chile for sixty-nine days. The article I read discussed the rescue of the thirty-three miners, which took place today, October 14, 2010. Luis Alberto Urzua Iribarren, one of the trapped miners, is credited for rationing food and being the first to inform rescuers of the miners’ position. Surprisingly, most of the miners’ health did not suffer dramatically due to this experience. However, many doctors believe that they may have post-traumatic illnesses because of the shortage of food and lack of sunlight in the mine. Many of the miners have already been released from the hospital and returned to their families and hopefully this will be the same for the rest soon. Thank you!
